It was one of those beautifully ordinary days that somehow ends up changing everything. Between a toddler's missing pacifiers, old friends, lazy hours by the pool and some life-changing news over supper, I found myself thinking less about the vacation we were on... and more about the life we're trying to build.

Family vacations are funny that way. You spend weeks planning every stop, every meal and every place you'll sleep... only to discover that the moments you'll treasure forever are the ones no amount of planning could have produced. This day gave us laughter, panic, tenderness and one very unexpected kiss that never quite landed where I hoped it would.

Every family has roles. On this vacation, our four-year-old became the most responsible member of the group while our two-year-old dedicated himself to testing the limits of parental supervision. Between face painting, bouncy castles, a thriving mall, and an escalator that quickly became the love of his life, Sophie and I spent the day alternating between making memories and preventing prison-worthy levels of toddler theft.

We spent the first day of our month-long road trip proving that a family of five can leave the house four hours late, forget essential gear, question every decision they've made and still end the day convinced that life is beautiful.
